‘Cell’ Trailer: Samuel L. Jackson and John Cusack Reunite For Another Stephen King Movie

Based on the Stephen King novel from 2006, Cell went into production a couple of years ago, but languished in post-production for so long that it’s understandable if you forgot that it exists. The first trailer has arrived to assure you that Cell is indeed hitting theaters soon — well, select theaters, anyway. And judging by this trailer, you can see why this one isn’t getting a wider release.

The film adaptation of Cell was first announced shortly after King’s novel hit shelves, with Eli Roth attached to direct. It took several years and just as many changes behind the scenes, but John Cusack signed on to star in 2012, with Samuel L. Jackson (his co-star in another King adaptation, 1408) joining him in 2013.

At any rate, Cell has been in the can for over a year, but it looks like it’s finally ready to see the light of day with the debut of the first official trailer. The story has an overt social commentary angle — cell phones turn people into zombies, literally — and is based on one of King’s lesser works, but with a cast like this one, the movie can’t be too bad, right?

Cell also stars Isabelle Fuhrman — whom you probably remember best as the little psycho killer in Jaume Collet-Serra’s underrated horror flick Orphan — and was directed by Tod Williams (Paranormal Activity 2). Here’s the official synopsis:

Stephen King’s best-selling novel is brought to terrifying life in this mind-blowing thriller starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson. At the Boston airport, Clay (Cusack) witnesses a scene of chaotic mayhem when an electronic signal turns hundreds of cell phone users into rabid killers. Desperate to find his estranged wife and son, Clay teams with a train driver (Jackson) to battle the horde of murderous “phoners” as the city descends into apocalyptic madness.

Cell hits Ultra VOD on June 10, followed by nationwide VOD and select theaters on July 8.
