In a rare move that sees major broadcast network CBS taking on a show originally developed for pay-cabler Showtime, CBS has announced that it will take to series an adaptation of esteemed horror author Stephen King's novel 'Under the Dome.' The project is to be written by 'LOST's' Brian K. Vaughn, but will it bring in the post-apocalyptic buzz that 'The Walking Dead' and 'Revolution' have managed to pull in? And will it continue beyond the initial order?

Stephen King is finally returning to broadcast TV, far longer than any TV movie adaptation of his work. CBS President Nina Tassler has announced that the network will tackle a series-length adaptation of King's novel 'Under the Dome,' to begin airing in the summer of 2013. The series will be written by 'LOST's' Brian K. Vaughan and original 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' helmer Niels Arden Oplev directing.

As readers of the book well-remember, 'Under the Dome' follows the story of a small New England town that finds itself inexplicably encased in a transparent dome with no hope of penetration. Inside, the residents of the town battle increasingly apocalyptic conditions as they struggle to understand what's happened to them.

“This is a great novel coming to the television screen with outstanding auspices and in-season production values to create a summer programming event,” said Nina Tassler, President of CBS Entertainment. “We’re excited to transport audiences Under the Dome and into the extraordinary world that Stephen King has imagined.”

Interestingly, CBS definitely intends the series as potentially ongoing, and will thus modify the novel's plot to encompass a more serialized approach to the material. Would you be interested to go 'Under the Dome' next summer?
