16 Great SXSW Films to Keep on Your Radar in 2017

Dozens of movies play at the SXSW Film Festival every year, making it impossible to see all of them in just eight days. Even if you attended the annual insanity in Austin last week, chances are pretty high that you missed at least a few good movies. And if you’re a cinephile who skipped the fest entirely (congrats on your sleep), you might be wondering which films are worth putting on your radar. Lucky for the sleepless and the well-rested alike, we’ve put together a handy list featuring some of the best films from SXSW 2017.

There Is So Much Cyber in the First Five Minutes of ‘Ghost in the Shell’

One thing’s for sure about the new Ghost in the Shell movie: There’s gonna be a whole lot of cyber. Cybercrime, cyber-people, there all is cyber. The plot hinges around, among other things, an android with a human mind investigating a string of brain-hacking crimes that leads her to a bunch of realizations about the nature of consciousness and humanity. Ghost in the Shell imagines a world where the line between human and machine is blurred almost to the point of nonexistence, with corporations selling body-augmentation technology amongst colleagues at fancy dinners. That’s where the opening of the movie finds Major, played by Scarlett Johansson, surveilling a corporate meeting that goes terribly wrong.

‘Baywatch’ Trailer: More Intentional Comedy, Same Amount of Slo-Mo Running

It’s weird — with every new trailer, the upcoming big-screen reboot of beloved ‘90s TV series Baywatch appears to get a little bit better. The first trailer promised a lightly amusing clone of the smart-alecky 21 Jump Street reboot, the second trailer advertised a competently-produced action tentpole with a healthy sprinkling of meta humor, and now, the so-called “official” trailer (does that make the first two unofficial?) teases what appears to be a sincerely funny comedy. At the very least, whoever cut this thing made it abundantly clear that stars Zac Efron and Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson have more chemistry than an eighth-grade science class.

The ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000’ Trailer Means It’s Almost Movie Sign on Netflix

It’s been almost 20 years since Mystery Science Theater 3000 was cancelled by the Sci-Fi Channel (this was back in the days when that station knew how to spell its own name). And bear in mind, this is after the show had already been cancelled once before, on Comedy Central, and its lone big-screen outting flopped in theaters. Just about any other series with that track record would be long dead and buried in 2017, but the legend of MST3K has grown over the years, aided in part by the ongoing popularity of its alumni, who’ve formed splinter groups like RiffTrax and Cinematic Titanic. Now, after a massively successful Kickstarter campaign, series creator Joel Hodgson is bringing MST3K back with an all-new cast on Netflix.

New Netflix Instant Releases: April 2017

April showers bring…new titles to stream on Netflix Instant. That doesn’t rhyme, but you get the idea. The New ‘Ghost in the Shell’ Clip Is That Water Fight We’ve All Been Waiting For

The whitewashing controversy surrounding Ghost in the Shell may keep it from becoming 2017’s big box office hit, despite how faithfully the filmmakers have recreated some of the most visually-arresting scenes from the 1995 original. It’s a bummer that Motoko Kusanagi is now Mara Killian because the movie looks absolutely gorgeous, as evidenced in this new clip, which takes its cues directly from an iconic scene in the original.

L.A. Movie Theater Is Handing Out Barf Bags at French Cannibal Coming-of-Age Movie ‘Raw’

Julia Ducournau’s French cannibal coming-of-age movie (no, I didn’t think I’d ever type that phrase either) Raw has been making waves ever since its Cannes debut last year, and a lot of those waves happen to be those of nausea. The film reportedly features so many scenes of gory flesh-eating that it caused audience members to feel physically ill and faint at numerous festival screenings. Now that it’s out in theaters in a limited release, one theater in Los Angeles has a solution: personal barf bags.

Melissa McCarthy Already Taking Sean Spicer Notes for SNL Return

SNL has one heck of a Season 42 finish ahead, to follow Louis C.K. with Jimmy Fallon, Chris Pine, Melissa McCarthy and The Rock, and live on every coast at that. Of all those names, however, McCarthy might build the most anticipation, as the Sean Spicer impressionist says she’s already squirreling away notes for the next appearance.

Mark Hamill Shares Another Photo From the First ‘Star Wars’ Shoot that Lucasfilm Kept Hidden for Years

Mark Hamill, like many stars who enjoy sharing glimpses of the days before they finally made it big, enjoys posting the occasional photo or two from the sets of Star Wars. Just a few days ago, he shared what might very well be the first ever photo taken of Luke Skywalker in costume out in the middle of the Tunisian desert. Today, another early photo of himself as the young Jedi was unearthed, and Hamill pointed out that Lucasfilm was not keen on letting the public see it for years.
