As we prepare to polish off the crap sandwich that was 2016, we can allow ourselves some scant crumbs of hope as we look out over the slate of movies for the year to come...

Preview the Movies of Tomorrow with the 2016 Black List

The wheels of progress turn slowly out in Hollywood. Stars can be minted overnight, sure, but the actual process of production can churn along at an extremely gradual pace; a screenwriter, for instance, can spend years trying to sell a script as it floats around the purgatory of studio heads’ desk piles. As such, every showbiz scribe dreams of landing their latest unproduced project on The Black List, an annual roundup of the hottest up-for-grabs screenplays that provides them with a highly valuable bump in publicity. In recent years, such fine films as Manchester by the Sea, Miss Sloane, Spotlight, and The End of the Tour have all begun on The Black List, and yesterday brought the official announcement of 2016’s lineup.

Katherine Heigl Goes Homicidal in Trailer for Erotic Thriller ‘Unforgettable’

What the world needs now, in these turbulent and chaotic times, is more erotic thrillers. They were all over the place in the '90s, and yet somehow they've fallen out of favor in the decades since There have been a few cropping up in recent years, inspiring hope for some kind of erotic thriller renaissance; an obsessive younger man terrorized Jennifer Lopez in last year's The Girl Next Door and Morris Chestnut got caught in between two possessive women in this summer's When the Bough Breaks. Today brings the first look at the next film to join their esteemed ranks and contribute to the slow resurgence of the noble but underserved erotic thriller.

Watch Michael Fassbender Take a Leap of Faith in New ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Clip

There are three things you have to know in order to be a good Assassin: how to tell who your enemies are, how to throw a dagger, and how to jump off of things. In this new clip from Assassin’s Creed, Michael Fassbender’s Callum Lynch/Aguilar knows his enemy (it’s easy to tell when they’re aiming a crossbow at you), throws a ton of daggers with deadly accuracy, and takes one death-defying leap of faith.

Batman Breaks Joker’s Heart in ‘The LEGO Batman Movie’ Extended TV Spot

If you really think about it, Batman and Joker’s relationship is co-dependent and unhealthy (clearly). Joker is obsessed with the Dark Knight, and while those feelings aren’t quite mutual, they thrive on each other in a way that’s totally melodramatic — we all have that couple in our friends’ circle; the ones that fight constantly and make each other so miserable that even you want to break up with them. That’s the humorous gist of Batman and the Joker’s relationship in The LEGO Batman Movie, which delivers a big dose of the latter in this new and extended TV spot.

Dane DeHaan Is Not a Well Man in This New ‘A Cure For Wellness’ Trailer

Unless you keep a close eye on the Austin, Texas film scene, you might not have known that audiences were treated to a special advance screening of Gore Verbinski’s A Cure for Wellness this weekend as part of the annual Butt-Numb-A-Thon. This yearly film marathon  —  hosted each year by Ain’t It Cool News founder Harry Knowles  —  often features an enticing mixture of classic genre movies and upcoming releases, and this year, both Verbinski and lead actor Dane DeHaan showed up for a special advance screening of their 2017 release. And if Twitter is to believed, it’s extremely disturbing and absolutely insane. Sounds perfect.

It’s a Meeting of the Michaels in the Latest ‘Assassin’s Creed’ Clip

As far as movies go, Assassin’s Creed is kind of in a weird spot. On the one hand, the cast of A-listers  —  and a budget estimated somewhere around $200 million  —  would suggest that the studio has every intention of overcoming the terrible track record of big screen video game adaptations. On the other hand, though, executives at game developer Ubisoft have previously admitted that they do not expect the film to make a lot of money. While they have confidence in their movie, they view it as more of a marketing effort on behalf of the games, not the other way around.

‘The Wall’ Trailer: Aaron Taylor-Johnson, John Cena and a Sniper Walk Into a Desert

Doug Liman is kind of a beast. Before the Edge of Tomorrow director’s next Tom Cruise project, American Made (formerly titled Mena), hits theaters, we’re getting another Liman action flick: The Wall. The first official trailer for one of two new Liman films arriving in 2017 has debuted online, giving us a sneak peak at a fairly simple dramatic thriller concept about two soldiers, a sniper and one very deadly standoff.

Watch Zack Snyder’s Trailer Mashup of ‘Batman v Superman’ and ‘Star Wars’

If you think Zack Snyder’s on the outs after the critical shellacking and box-office underperformance of this spring’s Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, then think again. For one, Bats v Supes (as we showbiz types call it) still made an unholy crap ton of money, and moreover, Snyder has another prospective mega-blockbuster coming down the pike in the form of April’s Justice League. Snyder’s pretty much unstoppable, in the same way that a mudslide or water cyclone is unstoppable. And now he’s struck again, this time with a faux trailer that mashes up his own Batman v Superman with elements of the Star Wars series.

Dom Goes Bad in the First ‘The Fate of the Furious’ Trailer

Sometimes you discover something in your life that you didn’t know you needed until you finally have it. Take, for example, the brand new trailer for The Fate of the Furious. If you’d made me list the 100 different things I want from an action movie, I never would have thought to request a scene where a submarine chases a fleet of vehicles across an ice-field. Now that I’ve seen the first trailer for the film, I kind of wish every action movie was just that scene for ninety minutes.
