‘Breaking Bad’ Final Episodes: Vince Gilligan Previews “Breakneck Speed,” Walt’s Victory at Hand?

Breaking Bad Finale Episodes Vince Gilligan

It’s hard to believe only eight episodes remain in the whole of ‘Breaking Bad,’ the first of which will premiere later this summer on August 11, and series creator Vince Gilligan certainly isn’t short of story. Gilligan recently spoke out about the final eight episodes’ “breakneck” speed, and what might prove to be a surprising victory for the New Mexican meth kingpin — amid all the bloodshed, of course.

Gilligan is still playing his cards close to the chest, but the showrunner revealed to Entertainment Weekly the character beats of the final eight episodes trump the bloodshed every time. “We’ve got some stuff that I think is going to be truly satisfying and truly shocking and jarring. It does not always center on moments of violence.”

But what of the major death on everyone’s mind, that of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) himself? Certainly that future vision we saw at the beginning of season 5 premiere “Live Free or Die” could hardly be said to bode well for Walter, but Gilligan teased a potentially surprising outcome for the cancer-stricken character, one which may or may not prove more triumphant than we’d expect:

I feel like this ending represents on some level, however small, something of a victory for Walter White. Read into that what you will. And try to be as open-minded as possible when you watch this episode, because it may not indeed feel like a victory. Or maybe it will. … I feel good about where it all ended up, and I can’t wait for people to see it.

However you read a victory for Walt, we certainly hope it doesn’t come at the cost of his brother-in-law Hank Schrader (Dean Norris), who finally seemed to put the pieces together about Walt in the closing moments of mid-season finale “Gliding Over All.” Said Gilligan of the battles in Walt’s future, “There will be antagonistic relationships aplenty. Walt’s got plenty of fight left in him. And he’s got plenty of forces to fight. You met some of them. Others you haven’t.”

Walt will have plenty of demons to face in the final eight episodes, including his own slipping grasp on the lies constructed around himself, but what do you think? Will ‘Breaking Bad”s final episodes end in a victory for Walt? Give us your predictions in the comments as we wait for the August 11 premiere!
