A poster advertising a performance by the Beatles at Liverpool’s Cavern Club yesterday (June 12) sold at Christie’s auction house in London for the staggering price of $42,515, according to

The hand-painted poster, which measures 20″ x 30,” promotes the November 30, 1962 show by the Beatles, who had released their first single, ‘Love Me Do’ nearly two months earlier, at the small basement club on Mathew Street. They played two sets that afternoon, at 12:20PM and 1:40PM. In between, at 1:00PM, was Pete MacLaine and the Dakotas. Eventually, the Dakotas found a new lead singer, Billy J. Kramer, and had several hits between 1963 and 1965, some of which were written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney or first given to the Beatles.

The Beatles performed 292 shows at the Cavern between February 1961 and August 1963. It was where future manager Brian Epstein first saw the band and Ringo Starr made his debut as their drummer. The Cavern closed down in 1973 and was partly demolished to make way for Liverpool’s underground train system.

However, a replica of the club was built using the rest of the original site in 1984, and it is still in use as a live music venue. In 1999, Paul McCartney played there for the first time since 1963 on his ‘Run Devil Run’ Tour. Its place in Beatles history makes it one of the most popular tourist attractions in Liverpool.
