Being proudly provocative has always been part of rock ‘n’ roll — from the music’s earliest days, when simply shaking one’s hips on television was enough to send middle-aged Americans into a righteous lather, the formula for some of the best rock has been one part rhythm, one part volume, and one part shock.
This has also been true for album covers, which some of rock’s most forward-thinking performers have used as a platform to shock, disturb, annoy, and generate thought-provoking conversation (although not necessarily in that order). It’s a long rock ‘n’ roll tradition — one celebrated with a new list over at Ultimate Classic Rock.
They have an all-star lineup and a pair of top five albums to their credit, so what’s keeping Velvet Revolver from soldiering on without departed vocalist Scott Weiland?
According to drummer Matt Sorum, the band has tried — even going so far as to record an entire album’s worth of new material with Slipknot/Stone Sour singer Corey Taylor. But it hasn’t panned out — so far, anyway.
If you remember when Bob Dylan’s son Jakob started the Wallflowers, prepare to feel really old, because Bob’s grandson Pablo has just released his musical debut — and he’s a rapper.
That’s right, world — say hello to 15-year-old Pablo Dylan, who lists Eminem as a major influence and calls his famous grandfather “the Jay-Z of his time.” Pablo recently released his first mixtape, ’10 Minutes,’ and if it doesn’t exactly sound like anything else in the Dylan family catalog, he expresses nothing but appreciation for its legacy.
His last marriage didn’t work out so well, but give Paul McCartney credit for perseverance: he’s getting ready to walk down the aisle again — and soon.
The UK’s Daily Telegraph reports that McCartney’s engagement to Nancy Shevell, which took place in May, will lead to a low-key London wedding in the near future, followed by a trip to New York for the newlyweds. As a friend of McCartney’s tells the paper, “Paul loves Nancy very much, but does not want a big wedding.”
With New Jersey Governor Chris Christie’s poll numbers dropping, an organization named Public Policy Polling decided to see what would happen if Bruce Springsteen ran against Christie for the office — and found that he’d enter with nearly half the popular vote.
After 50 years of rocking, Bob Seger is ready to retire from the road — but he has a few things he wants to take care of first.
That list includes a run of October shows that will take Seger and crew into New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Orlando, Dallas, Denver, and Vancouver. Specific dates for the shows — and additional stops — will be announced later.
The band will debut its new single, ‘Up All Night,’ on Los Angeles’ KROQ at 7:30 a.m., but if you aren’t within reach of the station’s signal, don’t fret: the track, which drummer Travis Barker has described as “heavy,” will also be available on the band’s website.
Bassist Nick Oliveri has been keeping busy lately — and not necessarily in a good way.
The former Queens of the Stone Age member, who recently rejoined his former bandmates in Kyuss for a reunion tour under the moniker Kyuss Lives!, found himself on the wrong end of a standoff with a Los Angeles SWAT team earlier this week, after a neighbor called the police to report a domestic disturbance.
The veteran supergroup — made up of Anthony, vocalist Sammy Hagar, guitarist Joe Satriani, and drummer Chad Smith — worked with producer Mike Fraser for the sessions, which produced songs such as ‘Last Temptation,’ ‘Something’s Gone Wrong,’ ‘Astral Years,’ and the lead single, ‘Bigfoot.’
