At least 5 people are dead and many more are still unaccounted for as heavy rains pounded Louisiana over the weekend.

As of this morning, 10,000 people are in shelters and 20,000 have been rescued from rising flood waters in Southern Louisiana with more rain forecast through today. More than 1700 Louisiana National Guard troops have been deployed and plans are currently in the works to rescue some people still trapped by rising water.

The federal government has declared some parishes disaster areas and they can expect federal aid to come their way soon. More than a foot of rain fell overnight on Friday in a deluge estimated to occur once every 500 years. In shocking photos showing the devastation, caskets that had washed up from a graveyard floated down the street in Denham Springs, Louisiana.

While the brunt of the storm that brought torrential rains was moving west toward Texas, Louisiana residents should remain cautious.

As of this posting, Victoria County is under a Flash Flood Advisory through today. This is the same rain that hit Louisiana causing the devastation. We won't get it this bad here but still, be careful.
