A Few New Laws Go Into Effect in Texas Today
New laws go on the books and into effect in Texas Tuesday. Here's a look at the changes taking place in the state, beginning with how jurors are picked.
Rather than a grand jury commissioner selecting grand jurors, the process will be replaced with a random selection method. In the past there has been much controversy over how the jurors were picked which was supposed to be at random. However, many attorneys attested saying the selection process was anything BUT random.
Also starting Tuesday, records, videos and other documents kept by private university police departments will be subject to the state's open records laws.
Other laws of note include:
Peace officer must now get a search warrant before conducting a body cavity search during a traffic stop
Allowing the monitoring of internet access of certain sex offenders.
Drunk driving offenders required to install an ignition interlock on vehicles to have driving privileges restored following an arrest.
Allowing female public employees time to pump breast milk in the workplace.
Civil and criminal liability for so-called "revenge porn" postings
Canine encounter training for peace officers
New truancy procedures and criminal penalties
Certain offenses and civil penalties for concealed handguns on property owned or leased by the government, including airports.
